Ventilation in the operating room

The ISO 14644 series of standards, which has the general name "Clean rooms and related control environments", developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), is a universally recognized document that establishes standards for ventilation of clean rooms, design, construction, equipment and certification, as well as dividing them into special cleanliness classes.

When designing, increased attention is paid to the technology of supplying air flows to special-purpose facilities. For example, air circulation in clean rooms with a purity class from 1 to 6 is carried out by air distribution equipment from top to bottom, forming homogeneous and unidirectional air flows of low speed from 0.2 to 0.45 m/s.

In areas of a lower purity class, the formation of a non-unidirectional flow is allowed with the help of several ceiling diffusers.

Methods of air purification
There are two types of clean rooms. As a rule, they differ in the method of purification of air masses:
Rooms with turbulent ventilation.
Rooms with laminar, one-way flow.
The latter variety allows you to observe the cleanliness of the highest possible degree, due to the fact that the flow directed in one direction pushes the polluted air out of the right room faster and better.

Air purification in a turbulent way.
When the air flow is purified by the turbulent method, the flows processed with the help of filters are fed through ceiling distributors. When clean air enters the room, it combines with the already present air mass, in which there is a certain level of contamination, and dilutes it.
Through the air intake grilles located at the bottom of the walls, a part of the displaced air is brought out. During the day of operation of ventilation installed on this principle, it can displace the exhaust air up to 20 times.

If it is necessary to make the air in a clean room even more purified, a view with a flow directed in one direction is selected. The meaning of laminar ventilation is to equip efficient filter components to supply air flow.

Fresh air entering the room moves through it in one direction (from top to bottom), while dust microparticles are retained and removed through holes in the floor. Usually this process takes place at an air flow rate of up to 0.4 m/s.
